The 26-mile Cal-Sag Trail is the fastest developing urban trail of its size in America, ever. That shows the tremendous desire for this trail, and the great need in these communities for a safe, non-motorized path for travel, health, and recreation.
For five years now, Friends of the Calumet-Sag Trail has kept the trail on track by providing funds that help towns match federal grants—leveraging $4 in trail-building federal funds for every dollar we’ve raised. So far, we’ve provided more than $90,000 to match $450,000 in trail building funds.
The trail enters its construction cycle this fall. Although federal trail grants will provide 80% of the $14 million construction cost, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources provided a 10% match, our communities and park districts still need to raise the other 10%—about $1.4 million.
Friends of the Cal-Sag Trail are all donors, including all of our board. We can tell you that it feels amazing to support this 26-mile long resource for healthy living, economic rejuvenation, and sustainable transportation. Your donation, at this time, makes the Cal-Sag Trail a part of your legacy, too.
